The story of our wine

A story of courage, discovery, and passion. Told by a winemaker who didn’t want to follow the ordinary path, but carve his own – directly on the north-facing slope of Plaus.

In 2008, Verena’s father realized his dream: he wanted to prove that wine could also thrive on a north-facing slope – a location that is rather unusual in viticulture.

The vineyard above Plaus is situated exactly where the slope is cooler than the more typical south- or southwest-facing sites.

The beginning was not easy, but with heart, patience, and determination, he succeeded in finding two grape varieties that not only thrive in this location, but also produce exceptional wines:

 A wine with personality

The White Wine - Kerner:

A fresh, aromatic white wine with clear acidity and intense fruit, made especially elegant and terroir-driven by the cool north-facing vineyard conditions.

Kerner is an aromatic white grape variety, created from a cross between Trollinger and Riesling. It is known for its fresh, fruity aroma, often featuring notes of apple, grapefruit, or apricot, and resembles a finely structured Riesling, while often being slightly softer and fuller-bodied. On the north-facing slope, our Kerner develops a particularly crisp acidity and intense fruitiness thanks to the cool nights and higher altitude – a wine that combines freshness, elegance, and terroir in the glass, proudly showcasing its origin.

The Red Wine - Zweigelt:

A fruit-forward, smooth red wine with dark berry aromas and a refined structure, gaining added depth and elegance from its slower ripening on the north-facing slope.

Zweigelt is a relatively young red grape variety originating from Austria. It is known for its fruity, lively structure, dark berry aromas, and soft tannins. On the north-facing slope of Plaus, Zweigelt ripens more slowly than in warmer locations. This longer ripening period gives our red wine a special depth and finesse, where elegant fruit meets a round, soft structure – a character that is both powerful and approachable.

How our wine is made

Our grapes are hand-harvested to ensure that only the ripest and healthiest bunches go into the wine. They are then carefully destemmed using a grape crusher-destemmer – a step that prepares the grapes for processing without damaging them.

Afterward, the grapes are brought into our small winery, where they ferment in barrels of just a few hundred liters. The small batch size allows us to monitor the wine carefully and attend to the quality of each lot individually.

As this is a home-produced wine, it is not filtered in order to preserve its natural aromas and structure. As a result, sediment or tartrate crystals can form at the bottom – natural residues of grape solids, minerals, and yeast left over from fermentation. These can be removed by gently decanting before serving.

Our wines are naturally cloudy, unadulterated, and free from artificial preservatives, allowing you to enjoy the full authenticity and character of our north-facing slope wine in the glass.

Why this wine is so special:

In South Tyrol, vineyards are spread across various altitudes and slopes along the Alps, producing wines of striking freshness and clear minerality. The most common and preferred exposures are sunnier slopes, such as south or southwest.

From our farm, we look directly onto the vineyard in Plaus. It lies on a north-facing slope —

a cooler and shadier microclimate.

The conditions are demanding:

Less direct sunlight

Greater temperature fluctuations

More demanding ripening conditions

Yet it is precisely these unique conditions that

give our wines their distinctive character: a combination of fresh elegance, fine structure, and intense aroma, clearly demonstrating how special our location on the north-facing slope of Plaus truly is.
